Travertine vs Concrete Pavers for Florida Pool Decks

Pool decks have requirements a driveway does not: bare feet, constant moisture, and pool chemistry.

Surface temperature

This is the deciding factor for most Florida homeowners. In direct August sun:

• Travertine stays noticeably cooler, a natural stone with high porosity
• Concrete pavers run hotter, though light colors narrow the gap
• Dark pavers of any material become uncomfortable barefoot

Slip resistance

Travertine's natural texture provides good wet grip. Concrete pavers vary by finish. A tumbled or textured face performs well; a smooth face does not.

Salt and chemical exposure

Saltwater pool systems are hard on materials. Travertine handles salt well. Concrete pavers hold up with a quality sealer but benefit from reapplication every few years.

For pool decks specifically, travertine usually justifies the premium. For driveways, concrete pavers remain the better structural choice.
