Driveway pavers are one of the most common projects we quote in Brevard County — and one of the most misunderstood when it comes to cost. The paver itself is rarely what drives the price. The base underneath it is.
What a paver driveway actually costs in Melbourne, FL
For most residential driveways in our service area, expect a range of $12 to $22 per square foot installed. A typical two-car driveway of 600 square feet lands between $7,200 and $13,200.
That spread is wide because three things move the number more than paver selection:
- Base depth. Florida's sandy subgrade offers very little natural bearing capacity. A driveway carrying vehicle loads needs a compacted base — thinner bases fail early.
- Demolition. Removing and hauling an existing concrete slab adds meaningful cost.
- Drainage. Slope corrections, channel drains, or regrading add scope.
Why base preparation matters more here than up north
Florida's sandy subgrade and heavy summer rainfall make base preparation the single most important part of a driveway paver installation.
In clay soils, the ground itself provides structure. Sand does not. Water moves through it quickly, and repeated saturation and drying cause movement. That is why we see so many driveways with dipped tire tracks and separated joints within a few years — almost always an under-built base rather than a paver defect.
A paver driveway is a structural system. The visible surface is the last four percent of the work.
Material comparison
| Material | Cost per sq ft | Heat retention | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Concrete paver | $12–$16 | Moderate | Driveways, general use |
| Travertine | $18–$26 | Low | Pool decks, patios |
| Clay brick | $16–$22 | Moderate | Traditional aesthetics |
| Porcelain | $20–$30 | Low | Modern patios |
For driveways specifically, concrete pavers remain the practical choice — they carry vehicle loads well and individual units can be replaced if damaged.
Signs your quote is too thin
- No mention of base depth or compaction
- No edge restraint included
- Demolition and haul-off listed as "if needed"
- No drainage assessment
A quote missing these is not cheaper. It is smaller in scope.
How long should it last?
A properly built paver driveway in Brevard County should last 25 to 40 years with minimal maintenance — occasional joint sand replenishment and cleaning. Failures we are called to repair are almost always traceable to base preparation, not the pavers.
